Euless, Texas — Franco Colapinto, a former Formula 2 driver, has stepped in as a replacement for Logan Sargeant at the Williams Formula 1 team following a series of disappointing performances and a costly crash.
Williams F1 announced the change after Sargeant, who joined the team in the summer of 2022, struggled throughout the 2023 season. Sargeant, a rookie driver, competed in 36 races but was involved in multiple crashes, including a severe incident at Zandvoort, Netherlands. The crash required over a million dollars in repairs, leading to his mid-season departure.
Colapinto, who has one Formula 2 victory to his name, has been given the opportunity to prove himself in F1. The 21-year-old’s debut race took place at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Although Colapinto qualified 18th, he made a notable recovery during the race, finishing 12th after gaining six positions.
“This opportunity is insane!” Colapinto said. “Every F2 driver dreams of moving up to F1. While qualifying was frustrating, I’m proud of my recovery and the performance of the team.”
Williams F1 hopes Colapinto will exceed expectations and compensate for the damage Sargeant's tenure left behind. Colapinto will continue to demonstrate his potential in the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix in two weeks, with eight more races ahead to solidify his place in Formula 1.
